Altadena Farmers Market is the place to be

 

Opening day of the Altadena Farmers Market was drawing a good-sized crowd, even in the first hour.

The (Altadenablog sponsor) Altadena Farmers Market opened this afternoon at 3 PM, and by our observations and those we talked to, it sounds like a hit.

Market manager Joseph Shuldiner shows off one of the shopping carts, which can be checked out at the market.

After putting so much effort into it, market manager Joseph Shuldiner said "I'm having an out-of-body experience," but not so much out of body that he wasn't working the crowd and accepting some well-earned congratulations.

Not that there weren't some glitches along the way:  parking stretched out for blocks along West Palm Street (hint: try parking at the Loma Alta gym parking lot and Lincoln and Loma Alta and walk downhill to the market).  There was some interesting vehicle choreography, as it was also trash pickup day along Palm and trash trucks and cars were involved in a little dance to make it through the narrow street (Al Evans of Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation said he would talk to Athens Waste to see if they would be able to change their pickup day).  And the Fox Pizzeria double-decker bus couldn't quite negotiate the hill on Dabney Street (Fox said they also ran into some mechanical problems and were looking for an emergency mechanic to try and salvage the trip).

But otherwise, it was a selection of vendors of local, artisanal foods and local boutique farms that gathered a growing crowd of folks.

Local tech writer Steve Bass said that he thought the food was a little pricey, but that didn't stop him from buying.  His wife Judy Bass said that she hoped that the market would be successful and continue.

Local author Michelle Huneven, who was also at the market,  waxed enthusiastic about having such a market in Altadena.

The Altadena Heritage-sponsored market will be every Wednesday from 3-7 PM, next to the Altadena Community Garden at Lincoln Avenue and Palm Street.

 

 

Students from Glenfeliz School in Atwater Village grew their own certified produce in the school garden.

 

"The Garden Of ..." from Los Olivos picked most of their produce this morning for the market sale.

 

 

Altadena Farmers Market opens today 3-7 PM at Loma Alta Park

It's here -- the long-awaited Altadena Farmers Market opens this afternoon at 3 PM at Loma Alta Park, near the Community Garden, at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Palm Street.

Sponsored by Altadena Heritage, the market has been featured at LAist, Grub Street,, Los Angeles Magazine, LA Times, LA Weekly,  and Pasadena Star-News.  (We've also been contacted by KCRW in Santa Monica, which is planning to run a feature today).

The market is managed by the Institute of Domestic Technology.

Sheriff looking for ARCO attempted robbery suspect.

   Sheriffs deputies are asking for the public's help in the the search for suspect with a handgun who attempted to rob the ARCO station at 1633 N. Altadena Drive.

According to a release from the sheriff's department, the suspect entered the station on May 12 at about 9:20 PM.  

The release says  the suspect "removed a handgun from his pocket and pointed it at the victim who was standing behind the cashier counter.  The victim believe the suspect was trying to scare him and he asked the suspect to leave.  The suspect walked around the counter and struck the victim twice in the head with the handgun.  The suspect left the location in an unknown direction."

Pasadena man commits suicide at Eaton Canyon Nature Center

A 55-year-old Pasadena man facing financial problems killed himself Tuesday evening in the parking lot of the Eaton Canyon Nature Center.

Authorities found him with a gun by his side, according to the Pasadena Police Department. Police officers responded to the site after the man called 911 at about 7 p.m.  and said he was going to kill himself at the parking lot.

Odyssey Charter School presents a "sustainable" Alice in Wonderland

Odyssey Charter School, 726 W. Altadena Dr., presents its middle school production of "Alice in Wonderland" in the orchard on Fri., June 8, and Sat, June 9.

While the show is free, there will be a tea party before the Friday show ($5) and Saturday's show includes a vegetarian catered dinner ($10) by Large Marge Sustainables.  (Much of the food for the dinner is coming from the school gardens and chickens). No tickets are needed for Friday's show without the tea party, but tickets to Saturday's show and dinner are available at Odyssey's website right here:

The play is directed by Daryl Bilandzija, the winner of GOOD Magazine's Most Innovative Teacher. 

Morning jolt: Midgets, markets, and King Mike

Indy racing: Altadenans at the Indy 500? Why not?  PSN has a history of our locals in the great race, with a side trip to midget racing (no, they're not racing midgets …)

King Mike I: Larry Wilson at PSN has a story about MIchael D. Antonovich making impolitic remarks about Dr. Lucy Jones and facing a primary opponent for the first time since, oh, the Jurassic period.  And he call him "The King of Altadena," a title we wouldn't deny.

Altadena goes Post: Everybody's in the Altadena Farmer's Market frenzy:  the Washington Post has a feature on summer cookbooks, which includes "Pure Vegan" by Altadena Market Manager Joseph Shuldiner (no. 12), including a recipe for jicama salad.

Arroyos & Foothills succeeds in Rosemont Preserve fundraising

The Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy has announced that it has raised enough funds in the past two weeks to create the Rosemont Preserve in La Crescenta.

According to a release from AFC, after announcing on May 14 that they were $20,000 short of the funds they needed to acquire the eight acres of open space at the top of Rosemont Avenue, community members pledged or donated $42,500 in about two weeks.  AFC says that "the excess funds will help provide for the long-term stewardship of the land and will allow AFC to begin planning programs for the local community immediately. From the beginning of the drive the community has generously contributed a total of $97,500."

Big donors included $12,000 by La Crescenta resident Henry Fliegel,  a $10,000 grant by the Wells Fargo Foundation and Scarlett Hibner of Flintridge donating $14,000 "in order get the conservancy’s planned projects and programs on the property up and running," AFC said.

Previous major supporters included La Crescenta residents Desiree and Paul Rabinov, $15,000; the Crescenta Valley Group of the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club and its members,  $5,000' and the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich was responsible for securing $350,000 in county funding.

 

MEMAH hosts free health fair at Pasadena's Memorial Park

MEMAH (Men Educating Men About Health) will have a "Get Healthy Pasadena" health fair this Saturday, June 2, at the Pasadena Senior Center and Memorial Park, 85 E. Holly St., Pasadena.

There will be free health screenings, food demonstrations, live music, and product vendors promoting health lifestyles,  

The event is free, and runs from 9 AM-5 PM.

 

"Triangle of life" during an earthquake? Fugidaboutit, LA County fire says

The Los Angeles County Fire Department says that -- based on real-life-experience -- the "triangle of life" method of earthquake survival doesn't work.

So to give us some ideas of what does work, the LAFD has released a booklet (available here in PDF form) about surviving earthquakes and other disasters.  

As for what you do during an earthquake: the watchword is "Drop-Cover-Hold On" (with animation to show exactly what you should do).

We just spent 72 glorious hours away from the computer, enjoying the sun and surf at Catalina Island Camps with the family, and not even checking in.  We love our work, but it was grounding and refreshing to spend some time away.  Expect many updates throughout the day as we catch up!

"Helen of Pasadena" comes to Altadena June 4

Lian Dolan, writer, producer, talk show host, podcast pioneer and author of the witty and entertaining tale, Helen of Pasadena, will speak at a free program presented by the Friends of the Altadena Library on Monday, June 4 at 7 PM.  

Helen of Pasadena, a Los Angeles Times Bestseller for over a year, was nominated for Best Fiction by the Southern California Independent Booksellers and is now being developed for television.  This romantic comedy, set in the familiar environs of Pasadena, tells the story of the likeable Helen who is leading a charmed existence among the roses and rose queens, loses it all, and suddenly has to reinvent herself. Her new life includes working with an excavator of Troy and solving ancient mysteries while dealing with neutron moms, c-list gossip columnists, and old and new money. 

Dolan is also the creator and producer of The Chaos Chronicles, a humor blog and podcast about modern motherhood which was developed as a half-hour sitcom for Nickelodeon.  Dolan co-wrote the pilot script.

Altadena Story: Mining the past for a more beautiful future?

The Altadena Town Council has set up an Altadena beautificaton committee -- an idea with a long past.  Historian Michele Zack looks at the history -- and future -- of beautification in Altadena

Meetings of the Altadena Historical and Beautification Society (established in 1935) were truly a mixed bag. One May morning in 1939 at the home of Mrs. Harry P. Gibson on Braeburn Avenue a scholarly talk on Pasadena founders Dr. Elliot and his consumptive land scout D.M.Berry was followed by a report from the Fountain Committee on the aesthetically pleasing watering hole at Lake and Mendocino it had erected earlier.  Winding up the morning was a briefing on Adolf Hitler’s effective use of propaganda to expand into Eastern Europe in search of Lebensraum. 

Society meeting reports in the Altadena section of the Star News noted talks by authors such as Charles Saunders on his new book The History of Early California Flowers and the reading by its letter to the Interior Secretary Harold Ickes in FDR’s administration protesting “Desert Plant Monument” as a name for our newest National Park. The Altadena group suggested the more evocative and specific “Joshua Tree National Monument.” It also voted to join “Opposition to Tree Slaughter,” a group or movement whose history might be lost, but whose spiritual descendants have certainly resurfaced over the years — a few years ago in Arcadia, for example.

The “Unsightly Lots Committee” chair reported that wild flower seeds had been obtained to plant in the town’s still many vacant lots, and members were active in educating citizens to avoid “unsightly business signs and other objects unsightly to the landscape.” 

Amid all this political, aesthetic, and horticultural action, the group published the community’s first history, Altadena, written by member Sarah Noble Ives, in 1939. Ives, former journalist and an artist, threw herself into community improvement as soon as she and her sisters arrived in town in 1924. She dedicated her book with a rousing quote in Sanskrit that was a call to bring about  “The Bliss of Growth, the Glory of Action, The Splendor of Beauty.”

Evolution of beautification
The ferment of the socially active, economically depressed 1930s gradually organized itself into distinct and discrete interest groups by the 1940s. The Society dropped “beautification” from its name and mission and became apolitical. Horticultural slack was taken up by other groups such as the Garden Club and the Forty Planters, a division of the Altadena Women’s Circle. Other activist groups came and went, and Altadena Heritage, originally a committee of the Town Council in the 1980s, emerged as a separate nonprofit that originally concentrated on activism in historic preservation, and more recently, in other civic and sustainability issues.

The latest version (2.0?) of a group intent on Altadena beautification arrived in 2011 when Altadena Town Council’s Chair Dr. Sandra Thomas asked me to lead a committee with this focus. She’s set up several committees, including a couple new ones, in the course of her chairmanship. Only when I began thinking about writing this article did I remember that history and beauty once co-mingled in a single society here. And that I, commissioned in 2001 by the Altadena Historical Society to write its second community history, was again walking in the footsteps of activist Sarah Nobles Ives with this latest beautification effort!

Between 11:00 PM and 7:30 AM (Tuesday) – A vehicle burglary occurred in the 1800 block of Midlothian Drive. Suspect(s) entered the vehicle via unknown means. Loss: orange iPod Nano, vehicle documents, black backpack. 

Tuesday, May 15t
9:20 PM – An attempted robbery occurred at the Arco Gas Station, 1633 N. Altadena Dr. The suspect entered the location, retrieved a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the victim. The victim believed the suspect was trying to scare him and he told the suspect to leave. The suspect walked around the counter and struck the victim twice in the head. Suspect last seen leaving the area in an unknown direction. Suspect described as: male, Hispanic, 25-30 yrs, 5 ft. 11 ins., 190 lbs., wearing a black beanie, grey hooded sweatshirt, grey sweatpants, and black converse. Weapon: black semi-automatic. Loss: none. 
Between 6:40 PM and 4:55 AM (Wednesday) – A commercial burglary occurred at the North Pasadena Medical Center, 2052 N. Lake Ave. Suspect(s) entered the location via unknown means. Loss: unknown. 

Wednesday, May 16
Between 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 2500 block of Catherine Road. Suspect(s) attempted to enter the residence by climbing a ladder and opening the rear window which was previously shattered. As the suspect(s) attempted to open the window, the alarm motion sensor detected movement and activated the audible burglar alarm. Loss: none. 
Between 8:00 PM and 6:30 AM (Thursday) – A commercial burglary occurred at Altadena Elementary School, 743 E. Calaveras St. Suspect(s) entered the location by shattering a window. Loss: none. 

Friday, May 18
Between 7:15 AM and 7:30 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 2700 block of Olive Avenue. Suspect(s) entered the location via the rear door by using bodily force. Loss: none. 
Between 1:40 PM and 1:45 PM – A petty theft from an unlocked vehicle occurred in the parking lot of Rite Aid, 735 E. Altadena Dr. Loss: silver wallet. (Plain sight).

St. Mark's School fundraiser at Ale House June 3

St. Mark's School parents are holding a benefit wine tasting on Sun. June 3, at the (Altadenablog sponsor) Altadena Ale & Wine House, with all proceeds to benefit the school's annual fund.

The event runs from 3-6 PM, and features an evening of cameraderie as well as seven French wine tastings and hors d'oeuvres.

• Buddha's hand: Altadena backyard grower and RIPE Altadena member Marsha Fowler is featured in an LA Times feature about the Buddha's hand citron, a rare fruit she grows: it's a citrus fruit that looks like yellow fingers.  It's not only rare, but endangered by  the Asian citrus psyllid, which is making its way through all California citrus crops.  Take a look at Jeff Spurrier's article.

Neighbors Empowering Youth, 2662 N. Fair Oaks Ave.,  has announced its roster of summer enrichment programs for grades 9-12 (ages 14-18), which will begin May 29.

 

"Inspiring Young People to Entrepreneurship":  George Combs and Allison Gibson will teach a Multimedia and Graphic Design course at N.E.Y. to high school students. The objective of the course is to inspire young students to entrepreneurship, and provide them with the necessary skills to launch their own innovative graphic design and/or website design businesses.

Forest areas closed after Station Fire to reopen this weekend

Nature enthusiasts will have something to celebrate Memorial Day weekend, as  Angeles National Forest officials will open parts of the Big Tujunga watershed closed after the Station Fire devastated the area in 2009.

On Wednesday, U.S. Forest Service officials said they hope to get final approval of the plan on Thursday.

Altadena Heritage's ninth annual Golden Poppy Awards June 17

One of the summer's key celebrations, Altadena Heritage's Golden Poppy Garden Awards and Fete, will be held on Father's Day, Sun., June 17, from 3-6 PM.

The Golden Poppy Awards features wonderful food and drink, including this year a special Father's Day keg from a local brewery.  A select group of Altadena gardeners will be recognized for their achievements in beautifying Altadena.

This year, the awards will be held at the home of Susann Edmonds.  Edmonds is a Master Gardener and the designer of the current landscape of her house, which was built by rancher Gustavus Bagnard in 1908.  Edmonds will present a brief history of her historic Altadena home as part of the Golden Poppy festivities.

Entertainment will be provided by Steven "Breeze" Smith and by Robert Hilton, maker of exotic instruments.

Altadena Farmers Market announces grand opening Wednesday

Next Wednesday, May 30, 3-7 PM, the certified Altadena Farmers' Market  (sponsored by Altadena Heritage) will fill verdant Loma Alta Park with farmers and food vendors, bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to Altadena.

"The launch of our (Sub)Urban Backyard Farmer Project has been a huge success thanks to the Market's "Assistant Secretary of Urban Farming," Elizabeth Bowman," says Market Manager Joseph Shuldiner. "Elizabeth has certified seven backyard farmers with the Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner and they will debut their homegrown produce at the Market Opening on Wednesday." Ms. Bowman will continue to coordinate the Market's (Sub)Urban Backyard Farmer Project, whose mission is to "harvest the city," as well as develop resources and workshops to incubate new backyard farmers for the market.

Hahamongna activists riled about meeting notices, timing

The city of Pasadena has scheduled three meetings about the environmental impact report for the planned construction of parking lots and soccer fields in Hahamongna Watershed, but local activists are riled about the timing and notification --or lack thereof -- for a meeting this week that was cancelled.

Local forest activist Lori Paul told Altadenablog in an email that “many of us failed to receive the usual e-mail notice of the Hahamongna Watershed Park Advisory Committee (HWPAC) meeting in Pasadena scheduled [May 22]. Then, after word spread about the important meeting via e-mail, apparently due to illness on the part of one or more Commissioners (?) and a resulting lack of quorum, the meeting was cancelled... less than an hour before it was due to start at 6 PM. The HWPAC web page (where meeting dates, locations, and agendas are posted) was not updated with an alert re: the last minute cancellation. “

What this means now, Paul said is that the next HWPAC meeting will not occur until July 24, after the Multi-Benefit/Multi-Use public meetings take place.  

The Multi-Benefit/Multi-Use public meetings involve discussion of a Pasadena city plan to construct soccer fields and additional parking lots within the park, which has drawn opposition from Hahamongna preservation activitsts.

This is not related to a separate Hahamogna EIR that will be undertaken by the LA County Department of Public Works.  That EIR involves a separate county plan to clean decades of sediment out of the watershed and, activists say, endanger the black willow woodland and wetland habitat that have established themselves in the area.  Those meetings have not yet been scheduled.

Meetings for the multi-benefit/multi-use EIR (i.e. for sports fields and parking lots) are, according to the City of Pasadena website:

Altadena Farmers Market: one week away -- want to host a farmer?

Check the countdown timer in the left-hand column -- we're just one week away from the opening of the Altadena Farmers Market at Loma Alta Park.  The market will run from 3-7 PM next Wed., May 30, at 600 West Palm St. at Loma Alta Park, next to the Altadena Community Garden.

The market is managed by the Institute of Domestic Technology, and sponsored by Altadena Heritage.

Eliot Middle School spring concert Thursday

Eliot Middle School invites the Altadena community to join us for our Spring Concert this Thursday, May 24, at 7 pm in the school auditorium.

The performance will feature the Eliot Concert Band, Orchestra and Jazz Band, and our special guests, the PHS Jazz Band.

The "Library Warriors" and our Book Club will host a pre-concert sale of coffee, baked goods, used books, and crafts - all proceeds will support our beautiful school library.

RIPE presents native plant workshop June 3

RIPE Altadena, those backyard farmers, are holding a new workshop.  RIPE's Gail Murphy says that this workshop, "Landscaping with Native Plants," will tell you how to create a yard where you only need rainwater to maintain it.

Roger Clemm will conduct the workshop, to be held at the Pasadena Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1280 E. Washington Blvd., on Sun., June 3, starting at 3 PM.  Cost is $20, but (what's NOT on the poster) is that they are requesting RSVPs to have the proper number of chairs and handouts available.  RSVP to  gail@ripealtadena.com.

 

 

Morning jolt: Altadena cuisine in Britain, cougar in Santa Monica

• Scholar: Rachael McDonald of Altadena made the Dean's List at DePaul University for the winter quarter of 2012. In order to qualify for the Dean's List at DePaul, students must earn above a 3.0 grade point average on a four point scale.  DePaul University is the largest Catholic university in the United States and the largest private, nonprofit university in the Midwest. 
• Critter-Monica: Altadena's not the only place with critter incursions:  there was a mountain lion who was shot yesterday  just a few blocks from the Santa Monica Promenade.

 

Honoring the Webster's legacy

At last week's Altadena Town Council meeting, the Webster's companies were honored by Los Angeles County for their long-time presence in and service to Altadena.  Webster's Fine Stationers' Scott and Lori Webster flank Joan Kearney Turner, who first worked for the Webster family in 1970.

 

Latino Senior Recognition ceremony June 3

The Pasadena Latino Senior Recognition Ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, June 3 at from noon to 3:30 PM at Pasadena City College, Creveling Lounge,  1570 E. Colorado Blvd. Pasadena.

Rose Bowl open house scheduled to discuss 710 freeway extension

There will be an "open house" to discuss the SR-710 study (i.e. the expansion of the 710 through South Pasadena to the 210) on Wed., May 30, from 6-8 PM at the Rose Bowl Stadium visitor's locker room, 1001 Rose Bowl Dr., Pasadena.

In this meeting, people will learn about the multi-modal alternative concepts under evaluation in the SR-710 Study process, including, but not limited to, the “no build” alternative, improvements to local streets and the expansion of transit systems, as well as freeway options.

Now is a key opportunity to provide feedback as part of the ongoing Alternatives Analysis phase of the environmental review process as this longstanding issue reaches this key milestone.

In a press release, Metro says "Come anytime during the meeting hours. Information at each of the open houses will be the same. The open houses are designed to provide one-on-one dialogue with the study team. This is a learning environment in which community members may engage at their own pace and in the subject matter that interests them most. The alternative concepts and other study process information will be available for viewing on large, interactive boards staffed by multi-disciplinary team members. (Please note that these forums are not public hearings. There will be no formal presentation nor will there be public oral comments.)

Memorial Day at Mountain View Cemetery honors Civil War vets

Mountain View Cemetery will have a ceremony to honor veterans this coming Memorial Day, Mon, May 28.  Historian Nick Smith says in an email that the ceremony begins at 2 PM:

It will be near the middle of the cemetery, south of Founder’s Circle near the huge oak tree. That’s near one of the areas with several Union Army veterans buried together, in a group of plots bought by the local Grand Army of the Republic post. There are also some Confederates buried near there, individually.

There will be guest speakers, followed by a walking tour, along with "decorating many of the Civil War and other veteran graves as we can manage," Smith said. 

There are over 600 Civil War veterans buried at Mountain View.  In an article for Altadenablog last year, Smith said that many veterans migrated to the Pasadena area after the war for a variety of reasons, which included business opportunities, health reasons, and fellowship with fellow veterans.

Mountain View Cemetery is at 2400 Fair Oaks Ave.

• Huntin': The California Dept. of Fish and Game now has hunting licenses available for the 2012-2013 hunting season.  You can also submit an application for the big game hunting drawing, before midnight on June 2.  They're only doing online submissions this year, and beginning June 22, results will be available.   Just don't hunt near the Meadows, OK?  
• Golfin': Alta-golfer Mo Martin advanced from the 2012 U.S. Women's Open sectional qualifier at Half Moon Bay to the U.S. Women's Open Championship, to be held July 5 at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wis.  More details at the Santa Cruz Sentinel. 
• Film-makin': LA Weekly has a great profile of indie filmmaker Allison Anders,  an Altadena resident.  She's going to start a film to shoot at her home with the likes of Gabriel Byrne and Patricia Clarkson.  Anderson's partner is Terry Graham,  drummer of the seminal punk rock groups The Bags and Gun Club (we actually saw Gun Club in our misspent youth).  This is why we live in a cool town. 
• Co-opin': The Arroyo Food Co-op will have a membership team meeting starting tonight at 7 PM at Beantown in Sierra Madre -- all are invited.  They'll also be holding an "office happy hour" at the Altadena Ale & Wine House from 7-9 PM Thursday, a time to ask questions or just enjoy a drink with your neighbors.

 

 

 

Found, but not caught: a roamin' cat

Reader Juliana has seen this one, but hasn't caught him (or her):

This cat walked up my driveway [Monday]  afternoon around 4pm. We are on Loma Alta near Canon. She appears young and also appears to have recently had kittens. No tags. Very friendly. Seems a bit thin. Never seen her around before.

She emailed us this morning that the cat is still around, so if it's yours, you may want to check out the corner of Loma Alta and Canon.

Peace Officers Memorial Torch Run ends in Altadena May 20

Altadena Sheriff Station Capt. John Benedict observed that the Los Angeles County Memorial Torch Relay honors “these men and these women that go out every day and don’t know what’s ahead you, what could change your life or the lives of ones you love.”.

The Altadena Sheriff’s Station was the final leg of the annual three-day run for fallen peace officers, ending Sunday afternoon.  More than 2,000 runners brought the torch from Sherman Block Sheriff’s Headquarters Building in Monterey Park to Altadena, following a 339-mile route divided into 59 legs.  The torch has been traveling to every mainland sheriff’s station in Los Angeles County since 1976.

“It is a distinct honor to be the last station,” Capt. Benedict said.  “The torch sits here until it goes to STARS Center.”  (STARS stands for Sheriff's Training Academy and Regional Services Center in South Whittier.)

Capt. Benedict had earlier traveled to Sacramento and Washington D.C. for ceremonies that included honoring Altadena Deputy Charlene Rottler, who passed away on Jan. 3, 2010, from injuries sustained in an on-duty collision in 1972.  He spoke of how moved he was to escort her daughter, Denise Alvarado, in accepting the honor.

The torch was carried along Altadena Drive to the sheriff’s station by Barbara Herrera, a citizen who has applied to be an officer with both the Los Angeles Police Department and the Sheriff’s Department.  Wally Stephen of the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team carried the torch for the four-mile leg from Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station to La Cañada High School.

“I’ve done it every year for the honor of it,” Stephen told Altadenablog.  He had expected more people to participate, but he was the only runner from Crescenta Valley to the high school. By the time he and the others came into the station, it was 94 degrees.

Deputy Gregory Gabriel, who planned the Altadena event including a barbecued chicken and potato salad lunch, read the names of the fallen officers.  His son, Jonathan, rang the station bell for each one.  Later, Jonathan, who will be the commencement speaker for his upcoming high school graduation, told us of his pride in his father for serving in the LASD.

• Officer Anthony Giniewicz, Signal Hill Police Dept., Dec. 7, 2011 of injuries sustained on Feb. 19, 1985

“I am hoping next year that there won’t be four names up there,” Capt. Benedict said.  “We celebrate that, we run for that.”  He asked for a moment of silence “for those we’ve lost, and pray—if you don’t mind—that we don’t lose any more.”

Pasadena police heliport open house Sat., June 2

The Pasadena Police Department will have its annual Open House at Benedict Heliport, 2175 Yucca Lane in Altadena.  The open house will be Sat., June 2, from 10:30 AM -2:30 PM.

Besides helicopters on display, there will be other police vehicles including an armored rescue vehicle, crime scene investigation vehicle, and mobile common post.   

Every hour, starting at 11:30 AM,  the open house will feature a different demonstration of police techniques including SWAT, K9s, or motorcycles.

Man shot, deputies investigating in Mariposa/Fair Oaks neighborhood [UPDATED]

One man was hit in a shooting this afternoon, and so far he isn't talking, according to the sheriffs.

Lt. Elisabeth Sachs of the Crescenta Valley sheriff station said that the victim is in stable condition at a local hospital and is "not forthcoming with information," she said.  The call came into the sheriffs at about 2:45 PM.

Mariposa Street between Fair Oaks Avenue and Highview was blocked off and evidence tags, such as used to identify placement of shell casings, were placed inside the perimeter, according to neighbors who've contacted Altadenablog.

Sachs said that the suspects are described as two black males, who left the scene in a vehicle of unknown description heading in an unknown direction.

UPDATE 5/22: Lt. Michael White of Altadena Sheriff Station said that they are putting the location of the shooting at Mariposa and McNally.  Sheriffs still aren't revealing much information while the investigation is ongoing, but White said that it was believed to be gang-related.

 

Visioning meeting #2 notes up; final meeting June 6

The third workshop -- which will review a draft visioning document -- is scheduled for Wed., June 6, from 7-9 PM at the Loma Alta Park gymnasium, 3330 N. Lincoln Ave.

CERT classes offered in La Canada in June

The Los Angeles County Fire Dept. is holding a CERT (Community Emergency Response) training in June at La Canada Flintridge on three consecutive Saturdays, June 16, 23, and 30.

Classes will be held at the La Canada Flintridge Unified School District building, 440 Cornishon Ave., from 9 AM-4 PM.

Space is limited, so you must register ahead of time.  To register, go to www.FIre.LACounty.gov and click on the CERT link.  CERT training is free.

Verdugo Young Musicians present spring concert June 1

The Verdugo Young Musicians Association will present a spring concert on Fri., June 1, at Longfellow Elementary School Auditorium, 1065 E. Washington Blvd., Pasadnea.

"JB and Beyond: From Bach to James Brown" features the VYMA Longfellow String Orchestras, Choir, Kinder and Musicianship Class in a concert that includes music from Bach to James Brown, and from TV and the movies. 

There will also be a world premiere by composer-in-residence Ted Masur.

The event starts at 6 PM, and is free and open to the public.

Dog found, Altadena and Tanoble [UPDATE: He's home]

Reader Jed has found a dog:

I picked up this dog today, Sunday, around 11:15 AM wandering near Altadena and Tanoble. Very sweet, Has a license in Monrovia, but the number to call is just the police, who say that the phone they have for the license number (Monrovia # 2759 exp 6/30/12) is incorrect. The dog is well cared for and very friendly. We are on Northaven in Altadena, and our phone is 626-797-4764.

Saturday in Altadena

Audrey Graff, 6, Maggie Graff, 8 and Gracie Turner, 9, salute in triumph at their lemonade stand Saturday afternoon.  The lemonade stand was a project for Maggie's GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) program, to earn money for the Altadena Churches Together Serving (ACTS) food pantry.  Mom Deborah Graff tells us that they earned $159.30 for the pantry by selling about 75 cups of lemonade (and no, they weren't $2 per cup!).

If you were looking for something more indoor-oriented, the Friends of the Altadena Library's annual used book sale was going on in the community room and the parking lot of the library at 600 E. Mariposa St.  It concludes from 1 PM-4 PM today, and there's lots of good stuff left.

 

 

Publisher's notebook: saying goodbye to a friend

In five years of doing this website, one of our favorite pictures is this one:  Tim Borquez, crowing in triumph at his haul at the Club 21 Easter Egg hunt on the grounds of the Col. Green Carriage House in 2011. Tim was always a ham, anyway, but he also personified the indominitable spirit of kids with Down Syndrome.  We just love the joy and pride and "bring it ON" attitude at play in this picture.

So it was sorrow beyond words when we heard that Tim, 12, had gone to sleep in his Altadena home Thursday night and never woke up again.  It was unexpected, but I can't think of a better place to go than in the big bed, sleeping nestled between Mom and Dad who love you.

We families who have a member with Down Syndrome are a tight little group -- we're always sharing stories about our kids, their schools, therapies, how they encounter the world, and how we cope with it all.  We share our triumphs and our tragedies together.Our heart and prayers go out to Monica and Fred, and his sisters Laura and Rebecca. Club 21 has a nice tribute here.

It's going to be hard going to East Altadena Little League Challengers practice today, where Tim was always a presence.  And it will be hard going to Lineage Dance's Club 21 dance class for kids with Down Syndrome Monday, because it was generally our kids and Tim.

If you want to get to know him a little, look around: he's had a bit of a TV acting career (we saw him on "House" once, as a student who was trying to comfort his teacher after she collapsed).  He's also been on "Nip/Tuck."  And, coincidentally, our Rosie was watching her favorite show, "Yo Gabba Gabba," this morning, and darn it, there was Tim.

We miss him already -- the world's a little less brighter now.
